HockeySync live scoring interface showing a shootout in progress

The game is tied after overtime. The crowd is on edge. One by one, players skate in on a breakaway, and the fate of the game rests on each shot. It's the most dramatic moment in hockey—and until now, scorekeepers had to handle it with a mix of paper notes and manual entry after the fact. That changes today.

We're excited to announce Shootout Trackingin HockeySync's live scoring interface. You can now record every shootout attempt in real time—who shot, whether they scored, and which team came out on top—with the game result updating automatically the moment the last shot is taken.

What Is Shootout Tracking?

Shootout Tracking is a dedicated scoring mode built into HockeySync's live game interface. When a game remains tied after overtime, scorekeepers can open the Shootout panel and record each attempt as it happens.

Each round of the shootout is logged with the shooter, the result (goal or save), and the running tally for both teams. Once a winner is determined—either by one team pulling ahead after the same number of attempts, or after sudden-death rounds—the game is resolved automatically and the final score is recorded with a shootout indicator.

Why This Matters for Scorekeepers

Before this feature, tracking a shootout in real time required workarounds: notes on paper, mental tallies, or pausing to manually update the score after the fact. None of those approaches give fans and players immediate visibility into what's happening.

Live Updates for Fans and Players

HockeySync's live scoreboard is visible to anyone following the game. With Shootout Tracking, every attempt appears on the scoreboard in real time—so fans watching from home see the same tension play out shot by shot, not as a final result minutes later.

No More Manual Resolution

Once the shootout ends, HockeySync automatically updates the game result and standings. You don't need to manually set the final score or flag the game as a shootout win—the system handles it. Standings update correctly, including leagues that differentiate between overtime losses and shootout losses.

Accurate Historical Records

Shootout results are stored as a full record of attempts, not just the final score. After the game, the game summary shows which players shot, what order they went in, and how the shootout unfolded round by round. That's real data, preserved permanently.

How to Score a Shootout

Using Shootout Tracking is as fast as the game itself. Here's how it works:

  1. Navigate to the live game from your league dashboard or scorekeeping link.
  2. Start the shootout by opening the Shootout panel in the scoring interface. This becomes available when the game is tied after overtime.
  3. Select the shooter from the active roster for the shooting team.
  4. Record the result—goal or no goal—with a single tap. The scoreboard updates instantly.
  5. Repeat for the opposing team. HockeySync tracks the round count and watches for a winner automatically.
  6. Confirm the final result when prompted. The game is resolved and standings are updated.

Tip:If your league rules require a minimum number of rounds before sudden death, that's handled automatically based on your league settings.

Shootout Stats That Actually Mean Something

Great shootout scorers are rare. Some players ice up, others thrive under pressure. With every attempt now logged against a specific player, HockeySync can build a picture of who your best shootout performers are over the course of a season.

Shootout goals and attempts appear in the game summary immediately after the game ends. As we continue building out stat tracking, this data feeds into player profiles so your shootout specialists get the recognition they deserve.

Built for Every League Format

Not every league handles shootouts the same way. Some leagues use three-round shootouts followed by sudden death. Others skip shootouts entirely and play extended overtime. HockeySync's shootout mode works alongside your existing game format settings—you only see the shootout option when it's applicable.

Leagues that award different standings points for shootout wins versus overtime wins will have standings updated correctly. No manual overrides, no confusion at the end of the season.

Available Now

Shootout Tracking is live today for all HockeySync leagues. The next time a game goes to a shootout, your scorekeeper will see the option automatically. No configuration required.
